Amstel Gold Race 2026: Evenepoel Nails Amstel Redemption in Limburg Thriller

Remco Evenepoel claimed a long-awaited victory at the 2026 Amstel Gold Race, defeating defending champion Mattias Skjelmose in a dramatic two-man sprint after 257km of relentless racing across South Limburg. With 33 climbs—including the Cauberg, Keutenberg, and Eyserbosweg—the Dutch classic once again delivered chaos, crashes, and a decisive finale that sets the tone for the Ardennes week ahead. One year after mistiming his finale, the Belgian delivered a masterclass in patience, power, and precision.

The lumpiest course in the Spring Classics – there’s no place to hide in these Ardennes.

That’s 27 – count ’em – climbs on today’s jaunt.

Race Report: Amstel Gold Race 2026

The 60th running of the Amstel Gold Race brought the usual chaos to the narrow, twisting roads of South Limburg – endless climbs, zero rhythm, and everything to play for deep into the finale. From Maastricht to Berg en Terblijt, the peloton never really settled, and that would always favour the bold.

Early Moves & Building Pressure

A nine-man break featuring names like Warren Barguil, Marco Frigo, and Huub Artz animated the opening phase, stretching their advantage to around four minutes as Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe kept things under control for Evenepoel. But as the climbs stacked up, the leash tightened—and so did the tension in the bunch.

The first passage of the Cauberg saw the hammer drop. The peloton split, casualties mounted—including Belgian champ Tim Wellens—and the race began to take shape. Up front, the break was whittled down to just a handful of survivors.

Finale Ignites: Crashes & Selection

The race truly detonated over the Gulperberg–Kruisberg–Eyserbosweg combo. Romain Grégoire lit the fuse on the Kruisberg, forcing a select group clear with Evenepoel, Skjelmose, Matteo Jorgenson, and others.

But the descent turned decisive—Kévin Vauquelin crashed hard, taking Jorgenson down and blowing the race apart. What had been a tactical chess match became survival mode.

Evenepoel Takes Control

From the chaos emerged a trio: Evenepoel, Skjelmose, and Grégoire. They swept up lone escapee Marco Frigo before hitting the Keutenberg, where Evenepoel launched his first real test. Only Skjelmose and Grégoire could respond—but not for long.

On the penultimate Cauberg, Evenepoel struck again—this time dropping Grégoire and isolating Skjelmose. The Dane refused to crack, matching the Belgian pedal stroke for pedal stroke over the final climbs.

The Decider: Sprint Redemption

With the chase group stalled at half a minute, the race came down to a two-man showdown. Evenepoel did the lion’s share of the work into the final kilometre—but this time, he kept his cool.

Waiting… watching… then launching at exactly the right moment, he powered past Skjelmose to take a decisive victory—and a measure of redemption.

Behind, Benoît Cosnefroy outsprinted the remnants of the chase for third.

Key Takeaways

  • Evenepoel Evolves: Learned from 2025—perfect sprint timing this time.
  • Skjelmose Still Elite: Couldn’t defend, but proved he belongs at the very top.
  • Crashes Change Everything: Jorgenson’s exit reshaped the finale.
  • Amstel = Chaos: Less selective than Liège, more tactical than Flèche—always unpredictable.
  • Ardennes Form Guide Set: Evenepoel looks locked and loaded for the week ahead.

PEZ Take

This wasn’t just a win—it was a statement. Evenepoel didn’t overpower the race early; he managed it, controlled it, and finished it like a seasoned Classics killer.

If this is the form he’s bringing to Flèche and Liège… the Ardennes might already be spoken for.
